Conversations: Art, Politics, and North Texas Vicki Meek

Vicki Meek was Manager of the South Dallas Cultural Center for 19 years. During her tenure she “birthed” acclaimed programs such as Diaspora Performing Arts Commissioning Program that commissions original award-winning work like Jonathan Norton’s “Mississippi Goddamn” and Michelle Gibson’s “Takin’ It to The Roots: a dance/theater work,” Summer Arts At the Center, an award-winning summer program for South Dallas youth that teaches African American history experienced through an artistic lens, Jammin’ at the Center, a midnight to 3 am open mic jazz session with local musicians, and Black Vision Film Series, an African-centered showcase of films by Black filmmakers. Meek was also responsible for raising the Cultural Center’s national profile by securing a partnership in National Performance Network/Visual Artist Network(NPN/VAN) and securing its first National Endowment for the Arts grant. She also served as Chair of the Board of NPN/VAN. Throughout her many years of service to the community, Meek established an unprecedented rapport with the Center’s surrounding residents and the Texas arts community as a whole.
